FRED ("FiRst EDitor") is an easy to
use but relatively powerful word
processing program, written
primarily for use by elementary
school children.
It features large letters, word
wrap, pull-down menus (as well as
"fast keys"), search and replace,
block operations, several internal
help screens, printer support, text
enhancements, paragraph reformat,
and standard movement keys (home,
page up, etc.).
FRED is free. You may make all the
copies that you like, distribute
them in school systems, let kids
take copies home with them, give
them to your friends, whatever. I
am a child psychologist who
programs as a hobby -- not to make
money. However, if you do wish to
receive an original copy from me
(to insure that it's recent,
because of virus concerns, etc.),
please send $11 to cover my costs
(you may then make all the extra
copies you like for free).
FRED will be revised from time to
time, and I'd appreciate your
comments (problems you've had with
the program, desired enhancements
-- mouse support, additional
printer support, etc.). Please

GETTING STARTED:
To get started, you need only to
type "FRED" at the "A>". Fred will
automatically detect if you have a
color system, and will load in
color (if you have a color video
driver with a monochrome monitor,
you will have to use the DOS "mode
bw80" command to interrupt the
color commands). Several help
screens and pull-down menus are
available --- the F1 key activates
them, the ESC key usually "turns
things off".
Printer definition files will be
added as users request them. For
those who are familiar with DOS,
the "plain.pdf" printer file is the
default file. If you copy one of
the other pdf files to that name,
it will become the default printer
file.
